Burnout Recovery Starts Here: 5 Signs You're Running on Empty & How to Protect Your Peace šŸ§˜šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

As busy women, we wear a lot of hats. We show up for our families, our careers, our communities, & everyone who seems to need something from us. For years, I believed that being exhausted was simply part of being successful. I thought pushing through was a strength. šŸ˜’

But eventually, I learned that constantly running on empty isn't a badge of honor—it's a warning sign. āš ļø

There was a season in my life when I was working multiple jobs, raising a child, attending graduate school, & trying to have a Hot Girl Summer all at once. On the outside, I looked productive. I mean, people calling me Super Mom productive. šŸ¦øšŸ½ā€ā™€ļø On the inside, I was exhausted, overwhelmed, & disconnected from myself. I did this year after year for what seems like forever, until I started to mature & understand that there was nothing cute about being burnt out, & it definitely was no way to live.

With all of that busyness, I was knocked on my you-know-what šŸ‘ (a few times) before I recognized it for what it was. And when I say "knocked on it," I mean everything hurts, there's no energy to get up out of bed, & mentally not present at all. I wasn't sick. I wasn't tired. I was exhausted & burnt out.

That's why protecting your peace has become non-negotiable for me. And it’s the foundation for creating Intentionally Evolve: to remind women to normalize sitting still & just breathing. If you're feeling stretched thin, here are 5 signs you may be running on empty—& what you can do about it.

A busy woman pausing during her day to write in a journal at a tidy desk, with a candle, planner, and greenery nearby. The image conveys self-care, reflection, stress management, and intentional living.

1. You're Constantly Tired, Even After Rest 🫩

You get enough sleep, but you still wake up exhausted. Your body feels heavy, & your energy disappears before the day is half over.

Now IDK what ā€œgetting enough sleepā€ is since it varies per person (I’m pretty functional & with a decent attitude with 6 hrs of sleep each night), but it’s important to know your limits & taking heed when that warning sign flashes.

🌟 What to do: Give yourself permission to rest without earning it first. Schedule downtime the same way you schedule meetings, appointments, & errands. Put that phone on DND. Go into hiding if you prefer. Burnout recovery begins when we stop treating rest like a reward.

2. Everything Feels Irritating 😤

Small inconveniences feel huge. You're snapping at people you love, feeling impatient, or becoming frustrated more easily than usual.

This is when I put myself on punishment in my bedroom & on silent lunch when I need to talk to others. When Mocha starts to peep out, it’s time to lock myself down.

🌟 What to do: Pause & check in with yourself. Often, irritation is a symptom of unmet needs. Ask yourself: "What do I need right now?" The answer might be quiet, sleep, support, movement, or simply a moment alone. Do whatever helps you to reset.

3. You Feel Disconnected From Joy šŸ˜”

Things you used to enjoy no longer excite you. Hobbies, friendships, & personal goals feel more like obligations than opportunities. Everything is like pulling teeth.

This is usually my sign to put some traveling in my life. Stepping away, whether it’s a week out of the country or a weekend in a local hotel, usually recharges my mind, body, & soul.

🌟 What to do: Reconnect with one small thing that makes you feel like yourself. Journal for 10 minutes. Take a walk. Read a chapter of a book. Protecting your peace means making room for joy again.

4. Your Mind Never Stops Racing šŸ¤”

You're constantly thinking about what needs to be done next. Even during moments of rest, your brain is creating another to-do list.

This is my normal unfortunately. However, I’m learning to shut it down a bit easier now.

🌟 What to do: Create a simple brain dump practice. Write down everything on your mind before bed or at the end of the workday. Getting thoughts onto paper can help create mental space & support burnout recovery. (Our new planner has space for this!!!)

5. You Feel Guilty for Taking Care of Yourself 😣

You know you need a break, but you convince yourself everyone else's needs should come first. That mom life will have you going through this quite a few times.

People pleasing is a habit I’ve been working for for years, & it’s so hard to get out of if you’ve been doing it almost your whole life.

🌟 What to do: Remember this truth: self-care is not selfish. The people you love deserve the healthiest version of you, not the most exhausted one. Protecting your peace allows you to show up more fully in every area of your life.

Protecting Your Peace Is a Daily Practice šŸ—“ļø

Protecting your peace doesn't mean avoiding responsibilities. It means refusing to sacrifice your well-being to meet them.

Some seasons of life will always be busy. But busy doesn't have to mean depleted.

If you've noticed any of these signs, consider this your reminder to check in with yourself. Your peace matters. Your health matters. Your needs matter.

And sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop, breathe, & give yourself the care you've been giving everyone else.

Your burnout recovery starts with one intentional choice today, so what are you waiting for???
